I love throwing a good party. Always have. And sure, I can put on a lovely dinner for a few other couples or a barbecue for neighborhood families, but my favorite is a party with a theme!
Now, being an author, I'm all about themes. I've been living 'in the fairy realm' for many years while writing and promoting my latest book. The theme must be obvious from the title to the cover to how my book is displayed at live events as well as on my website. This is why I bring a fairy house around with me to signings (see earlier post: Anatomy of a Book Signing) and why I have sparkle butterflies adorning my table and book stands. It makes the potential reader excited and ready to enter the world I have created within the pages of my story. And when I had my big book launch party, it was all about flower-adorned cupcakes and whimsical flower arrangements. Fairy good stuff!
And in between book events, I keep myself going by throwing creative theme parties. My husband and I are famous for our annual Oktoberfest, with beer mug holding competitions, bratwurst, yodeling-- the whole schnitzel! We also had annually themed summer kick-off parties: surf/beach when our friends brought and displayed their surfboards, with beach chairs and towels all over the lawn, and 'beach' volleyball. Or even a pirate party with a 'plank' you had to walk if you told a bad pirate joke! And my dear hubby recently celebrated his 50th with a 'Hawaii 5-0" party. So recently, my friend and I threw a Halloween party: Witches and Wine! Ladies only, we encouraged all attendees to dress up (even in the tiniest way) like a witch. We decorated and cooked to make it a party to remember. Here are my tips to throw a terrific party with any theme:
1. Invitations: These have to be fun and match your theme. An invitation sets the tone from the get go-- will it be fun, will it be special?

Add a poem, ask people to participate somehow. Set a fun tone from the start!
2. Decorate: I'm a 'do it big or don't do it at all' kind of gal. And that it why I am the owner of dozens of holiday bins full of themed decorations. Set up thematic vignettes throughout your home:

3. Food: Your food must also match your theme. Halloween is a perfect time to make 'creepy' items, like spider deviled eggs, monster finger cookies, and a pumpkin-shaped cheese ball:
No one ate the first hour because they were all busy taking pictures of the table! Ha! We also made a witches' brew in a cauldron with dry ice billowing from beneath! And people did dress up~ was great seeing all of the 'pointy hat ladies' mingling in my house!
4. Favors: And lastly, even though you usually only see them at kids parties, doing a simple, small favor as a takeaway makes your party complete. Adults like goodie bags too!:
So, next is a Dia de Los Muertos block party, with a taco truck, skeleton banners, and colorful skull cookies.
Who says a party has to be ordinary? Life should be made extraordinary by creating themes of enchantment along the Fairy Trail of life!
